Anti wrinkle injections myths model 01

Anti Wrinkle Injections: Myth or Fact

Most people nowadays know about anti-wrinkle injections. TGA regulations do not allow us to mention any products by name. You may have tried them yourself or you may know someone who has.

I find that many of my patients want to do something about their fine lines and wrinkles, but are sometimes shy to try this treatment because of the stigma created about cosmetic anti-wrinkle injections. It is funny because I know that many people may not even realise that their family or friends have actually had a treatment or have regular treatments. If performed correctly, this treatment can be effective at removing unwanted fine lines and wrinkles, without people even knowing you have had anything done.

So what are some of the myths surrounding anti wrinkle injection treatments?

The product used is toxic to the body

This is a big concern that people have about anti-wrinkle injections, but it is actually a myth. The treatment is performed by injecting a protein that has been purified. It is true that the protein was initially found in a form of food poisoning, however the protein is purified and is completely safe to be used in therapeutic doses. The product once injected cannot spread into areas outside the area being treated. The product used is so safe in fact that the TGA has given it a stamp of approval.

This treatment can distort your face and expressions

Many people joke that anti-wrinkle injections can cause the face to look frozen or stop you showing any expression. The truth is, facial distortion such as drooping eyebrow or lack of facial expressions are only experienced in patients when they have had too much product injected, or the product has been injected into the wrong muscles. Like with any cosmetic or medical procedure it is important to choose the right injector. Doctors have had years of training in anatomy and understand the facial structure making them the best person, in my opinion, for this procedure. The placement of injections is an art. My surgical training and artistic sensibilities allow me to accomplish a highly natural looking result.

This treatment is painful

Some people have had a bad or painful experience with this treatment in the past, or know someone who has. This is not the case,as I use several tricks to minimise any injection associated discomfort. My patients are always surprised at how easy and painless the experience is. There should be no unpleasant feelings before or after the treatment. Although rare, some people may experience a small bruise.

Cosmetic treatments are only for older people

When people talk about cosmetic treatments and anti-wrinkle injections they picture someone in their 50s or 60s with lots of wrinkles. However, anti-wrinkle injections can be administered in much younger people, if there is a real need for them to have this treatment. Some people develop lines at an early age due to repeated use of facial muscles. Treating these lines early is the best approach so they do not become ingrained and therefore harder to treat.

This treatment is addictive

It is not true that people become psychologically dependent on anti-wrinkle injections. People do look and feel younger as their wrinkles improve and their skin becomes smoother. This treatment is not permanent, with results usually lasting 3 to 6 months. As the effect starts to wear off, patients usually want the effect to be maintained and they do so by having further treatments. This does not mean that they are addicted to the treatment. Instead they have a desire to look good and to maintain this. This is no different to having your hair coloured or buying a cream to try and achieve the same results.

Cosmetic treatments, and in particular anti-wrinkle injection have come a long way since it was first used in the early 1990s. Myths start because people do not know all of the facts. I hope this has cleared up a few questions you may have had about anti wrinkle injections.

No matter what your cosmetic concern, it is always important to ask lots of questions so that you feel comfortable you are having the right treatment for you. It is not only important to have the right treatment, but even more so to have someone you can trust and who is qualified to perform the procedure.

Thinking about having a treatment?

I often see patients who focus on one particular area that they do not like, despite the other obvious signs of aging. The most vital element to delivering overall natural results, is the understanding of how your face is aging and the mathematics of beauty and facial harmony. (Click here to read more about beauty by numbers)

Frozen faces, droopy eyelids and generally bad results are caused by injectors who do not understand the anatomy of the face and the mathematics that is needed to create that perfect balance and natural look. The best results are often obtained by combing anti-wrinkle injections with other treatments such as revolumisation.

I personally have a lifelong interest in the visual arts. I am passionate about the mathematics of beauty and achieving subtle but tangible results. I want my patients friends and colleagues to think they look good, without knowing exactly what they have had done.

Cosmetic injecting is a true form of art. A masterpiece cannot be rushed, and neither can your treatments, if you truly want an outstanding outcome.

After listening to your concerns and assessing your facial anatomy, I can offer you treatment options and guidance. If something is not suitable for you I will be honest and let you know. I can also offer you advice on treatments you may not have considered. It is all about taking a holistic approach to address wrinkles, volume loss, skin tone and texture and any other concerns that you may have. I will personally perform your injectable or surgical treatment.
