What is vascular laser?
The term ‘laser’ is an umbrella term to describe a wide variety of devices, technologies and parameters. Vascular laser is a laser that treats blood vessel (vascular) lesions (which include broken capillaries or telangiectasia, angiomas, venous lakes) and improves background facial redness. All lasers work by having tissue targets (chromophores) and the chromophore for vascular laser is the red pigment in the blood (haemoglobin). The energy selectively heats blood vessels causing them to be damaged and then allowing them to be removed by the body’s natural healing processes.
We use the Cutera Excel V system, a dual-wavelength laser (532nm and 1064nm) that allows us to treat vessels at varying depths across all skin types—from fair to dark complexions. This system also includes the Laser Genesis™ handpiece, which is ideal for reducing diffuse redness, stimulating collagen production, refining skin texture, and minimising the appearance of pore size.
Who is a suitable patient
Vascular laser is used to treat many vascular lesions including:
1. Broken capillaries or telangiectasia
2. Cherry angiomas
3. Venous lakes
4. Generalised background redness
5. Rosacea
6. Sun-damaged skin
Vascular lasers are also extremely useful in conditions which involves a significant inflammatory component, such as melasma. By controlling the vascular component, it aids in the control of the condition.
We use our vascular laser to improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks, provided that these are treated when they continue to have a vascular component present (pink or red discolouration visible).
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your journey begins with a thorough consultation and clinical assessment. This allows us to understand your skin, diagnose your concerns accurately, and develop a personalised treatment plan.
Vascular laser is often part of a broader approach to managing conditions like rosacea and sun damage, and we often recommend combining it with sun protection, prescription skincare, prescription medication and other modalities for optimal results.
Common side effects after treatment include redness, mild discomfort and swelling. These side effects are temporary and should subside within a few days to a week. It is important to follow our post-procedural instructions to minimise these expected consequences of treatment.
Multiple sessions are often needed to achieve the best outcome, and many patients choose to continue with maintenance treatments to preserve their results and support ongoing skin health.
