What are chemical peels
Chemical peels have remained a popular and effective solution for resurfacing the skin for over 100 years. In this time frame, many other procedures for skin rejuvenation have come and gone, but peeling has persisted as a reliable, efficacious and cost-effective method of skin renewal.
Over the past number of decades, laser treatments have come to the forefront and become one of the major tools in facial rejuvenation. To some extent, chemical peels have been relegated to second place. However, there is a large body of scientific knowledge in relation to the chemistry and clinical outcome of chemical peel procedures, such that a resurgence of their popularity can now be seen. With this increased knowledge, chemical peels have found a place alongside other treatments. Traditionally, chemical peels are classified according to the depth of the peel. Ranging from very superficial, superficial, medium to deep. As doctors, we select the best peel for our patients depending on their skin needs.
We use many different chemical peels including: lactic acid, mandelic acid, salicylic acid, trichloracetic acid (TCA) and Jessner peels.
Who is a suitable candidate
There are several categories of patients who may benefit from chemical peel treatments.
Patients with pigment concerns where there is an excess of melanin in the first layer of the skin (epidermis), such as freckles and various types of melasma.
Chemical peels work well to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve the colour and texture of the skin, as well as reducing pore size. It is therefore helpful for people with tired and dull-appearing skin.
