Ultrasound in cosmetic medicine
As the popularity of aesthetic treatments has grown significantly worldwide, so too has awareness of the potential for complications. While the overall risk remains low, some adverse outcomes can be serious. Most complications, however, can be successfully managed when identified early and addressed with appropriate care.
The use of diagnostic ultrasound has greatly facilitated the early diagnosis and prevention of certain aesthetic treatment complications. Its use was first pioneered by Dr Leonie Schelke and Dr Oscar Jansen from the Netherlands. They were very generous in sharing their knowledge and experience with us.
Ultrasound allows the direct visualisation of the underlying anatomy and in particular the location of arteries.
In our practice we use diagnostic ultrasound in the following ways:
- We conduct routine ultrasound assessments prior to treatment to accurately map and understand your facial anatomy,
- To identify the location and extent of previously placed material in the management of treatment-related complications,
- We can perform ultrasound-guided injections when required, including the administration of dissolving agents where appropriate.
With this in mind, we set up a Complication and Dissolving Clinic in 2019 with the aim of serving Canberra and the surrounding area. We accept referral from practitioners and directly from patients if they suspect that they have encountered a aesthetic or cosmetic treatment related complication. We will endeavour to provide urgent assessment and treatment if needed as we appreciate that early recognition and treatment is critical in ensuring a good outcome.
