What is radiofrequency microneedling
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling combines two technologies commonly used for skin rejuvenation, radiofrequency and skin needling.
RF technology relies on the resistance within the skin itself to convert RF energy into heat (thermal energy). This thermal energy causes collagen contraction and stimulation of collagen making cells (fibroblasts) to produce more collagen.
Skin needling causes physical trauma to the skin and through stimulation of the body’s own wound healing response also stimulates fibroblasts to produce more collagen.
When combined, fractionated RF microneedling gives enhanced results than could not be achieved with either technology alone.
There are multiple fractionated RF microneedling devices on the market. At Aesthetic Harmony we have chosen Potenza™. There are several advantages of the Potenza™ device over other devices on the Australian market.
Potenza™ is the world’s first RF microneedling device that combines monopolar and bipolar RF at 1 and 2 MHz frequencies in a single device. This unique 4 mode combination device allows us to manipulate the treated parameters specifically to each patients’ needs.
The ability to adjust needle depth and energy setting allows areas off the face and on the body to be treated more safely.
Needles can be insulated or non-insulated. Potenza™ uses insulated needles, allowing RF energy to be delivered to the exact depth required without heat damage to the surface layers of the skin. This minimises trauma to the topmost layer of the skin with the injury coming only from penetration of the fine needles. These insulated needles reduce the risk of complications especially in patients with darker skin types and reduces healing time.
The channels created by the fine needles allow application of topical products to penetrate more deeply than would be otherwise achieve with only superficial delivery. Additionally, Potenza™ has a drug infusion tip designed specifically to deliver medications to various depths within the skin.
An exclusive feature of the Potenza™ RF microneedling device is the Tiger tip™ technology allowing more tissue at multiple depths to be treated in one single session.
Unlike other devices such as fractional lasers, RF energy is not specifically absorbed by the brown skin pigment (melanin). It can therefore be used more safely in those with darker skin types.

What to expect
As with all our medical procedures, a consultation and examination is necessary prior to Potenza™ RF microneedling.
For your comfort during the treatment, we apply a topical anaesthetic cream over the area to be treated at least 30 minutes prior to the procedure being performed.
During the procedure the device hand piece is passed over the skin. The fine needles penetrate the skin and the RF energy is delivered once the needles reach the desired depth.
The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to complete but will vary depending on the area/s being treated.
Immediately following treatment your skin will feel warm but will not be painful. Over the following days there will be mild redness and swelling. Bruising is uncommon.
We utilise the benefits of our Healite II immediately after any Potenza™ RF microneedling treatment to promote and accelerate the healing process and improve the end result even further.
Specific aftercare instructions will be given to you at the time of your procedure.
Sun protection including daily wearing and correct application of sunscreen is mandatory during treatment and is of course recommended long term as part of your skin care routine.

Whilst the Potenza™ RF microneedling technology is suitable for a wide variety of skin concerns, as with all our medical treatments, a medical consultation is required prior to treatment to ensure that this is the correct treatment for your skin condition.
Many skin conditions benefit from a variety of treatment modalities and this consultation allows discussion of all the possible treatment options available to you.
Patients with red or brown discolouration (dyschromia) will also benefit from picosecond pigment laser, vascular laser and IPL treatment.
Subsicison and dermal filler treatment is often also utilised for depressed (atrophic) acne scarring.
Pre and post treatment at home prescription skin care is vital to ensure minimal downtime, optimal healing and clinical outcomes.
